Bruce Birren, Ph.D.
Bruce Birren is an Institute Scientist at the Broad institute and Director of the Broad’s Genomic Center for Infectious Diseases. His research focuses on developing and applying new laboratory and computational methods for genome analysis, across a wide variety of organisms. He founded the Broad’s Diversity Initiative and an institute-wide mentoring program. He is a Principal Facilitator for the National Research Mentoring Network and for the Center for Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research. He is part of the facilitation team for the NIH-funded, Randomized, Controlled Trial of a training on culturally aware mentoring. He is part of the facilitation team for the year-long Mentorship Skills Development course for advisors of the HHMI Gilliam Fellows and co-leads the curriculum development for HHMI’s new Scientific Mentorship Initiative. He leads workshops and longer term interventions to help organizations assess and strengthen their culture of inclusion to counter the overrepresentation in research careers of specific groups at the expense of others.
